I first met Garry Edward Dicketts in mid or late 1990. I said farewell to Garry today at the Church of St. James The Less Mt. Eliza. GArry passed away on the morning of 9th October, 2005.
I will always vividly remember the first time that I met Garry - he was an incredibly accepting, intelligent, sensitive and warm person, particularly given the circumstances of our first meeting. Over the years, Garry proved to be a very loyal, caring, open, honest, consistent friend and supporter and a woderful role model for moderation in all things. Garry never won any gold medals at the Olympics nor did he ever build a multi-million dollar business... but from my perspective, he left an even greater legacy than any of that type of thing - Garry has left a world full of wonderful memories of good times and "quality" time. Garry really understood the concept of quality time - some of my most memorable and enjoyable experiences were spent with Garry and Garry and Heather doing some very ordinary things in a very special way. Some of these "quality times" to name but a few include the time we all went to Gunnamatta in the very early morning with my Labrador Apollo and I watched Garry and Heidi surfing; another was the time Garry, Heidi and I went for a bike ride to Mordialloc together, another was the time we all went to Joanna for a long weekend, and many many other times including dinner or lunch at Tulip Grove in Cheltenham. And who can forget Garry's passion for his beloved oil shares which he patiently watched go up from a few cents to a few dollars over a period of a couple of years (with me telling him to sell them every time they went up by 50%... but no, he held them and held them and he was right to do so - admirable patience and faith!! and justly rewarded! And it is not possible to remember Garry without immediatley thinking at the same time of Heather, Garry's beloved and loving partner of many many years. Heather truly loved Garry and they were each other's best friends. Heather has been a pillar of strength for the family in the past months and has been a most wonderful loyal and loving life-partner for Garry.
I am so grateful that I was able to speak with Garry by phone recently but very sad that he left so suddenly and before I was able to go and visit him... as Heather has said to me, I will let that be a lesson to me... I will think about you often Garry and always remember you with great fondness and admiration.
